Bryant Leads Lakers Past Spurs in Game 4

Kobe Bryant looked back and found himself all alone. All but guaranteed the basket, he went up and slammed the ball with a little extra oomph, just for good measure.

One more win, and Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers will be all alone in the Western Conference and on their way to the NBA Finals.

The Lakers beat the San Antonio Spurs 93-91 on Tuesday night - surviving a last-second 3-point attempt that would have given the Spurs the win - for a 3-1 lead in the conference finals.

"It is a big step for us,'' said Bryant, who led the Lakers with 28 points and 10 rebounds. "Tonight we came out and did a much, much better job to win in this building in this particular game. It's big for us.''

The defending champion Spurs lost at home for the first time this postseason and they face elimination when they play Game 5 in Los Angeles on Thursday.

The Lakers were last in the Finals in 2004 when they lost to Detroit in five games.

Ewing Upset Over No Coaching Call From Knicks

"There's nobody who is an assistant coach who doesn't want to be a head coach," said Ewing. "Unless you've already been a head coach and you're older and you're just putting in hours until you retire. I'm young. I'd definitely want to be a head coach one day. And I'm disappointed I didn't get a call, yeah.

"I think I'm an up and coming coach. I think I'm going to be a good head coach one day. Even if I don't get the job, I felt I deserved at least to get an interview."

Noah receives another citation

Roughly 17 hours after being arrested and charged with misdemeanor drug and alcohol offenses, University of Florida police issued two traffic citations to >Joakim Noah on Sunday.

Noah, who attended the Gainesville school, received citations for driving with a suspended license without knowledge and for not wearing a seat belt.

Paxson Impressed with Rambis

Rambis, 50, went 25-13 in 1999 when he took over for Del Harris as Lakers interim coach. He also led the team during training camp last season when Phil Jackson recovered from hip surgery.

Rambis interviewed for the Kings' job that went to Reggie Theus last season. The Lakers granted Paxson permission to interview Rambis and fellow assistant Brian Shaw during their break between the conference semifinals and finals.

The article went on to say that an interview that was suppose to be with Avery Johnson has not been rescheduled.

Woods says he’s ‘on schedule’ to play US Open

Tiger Woods entered the room with a slight limp and unwavering determination to play the U.S. Open.

“The knee’s doing better,” said Woods, who had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee April 15. “The rehab is boring. It gets really old riding that bike, man. But everything’s on schedule. Just been training and trying to get this thing organized for the Open, and it’s right on schedule for that.”

Woods spoke Tuesday at Congressional Country Club. The second annual edition of Woods’ own PGA Tour event, the AT&T National, returns to Congressional in July.

The U.S. Open will be at Torrey Pines in San Diego on June 12-15, a major that could prove a bit dicey for the world’s No. 1 player following a two-month layoff.

Woods had hoped to fine-tune his game this week at the Memorial, but he withdrew and has no plans to play in next week’s Stanford St. Jude Classic in Memphis, Tenn.

Ex-MLB pitcher Gonzalez killed by lightning

Former major league pitcher Geremi Gonzalez, who won 11 games for the Chicago Cubs in 1997, was killed by a lightning strike in his native Venezuela on Sunday. He was 33.

Emergency management official Herman Bracho said Monday that Gonzalez was struck by lightning at a beach.

Gonzalez pitched for five major league teams from 1997-06. The right-hander appeared in 131 games with 83 starts, compiling a 30-35 record.

Gonzalez also played for the Tampa Bay Rays, Boston Red Sox, New York Mets and Milwaukee Brewers. He made a combined 24 appearances for the Mets and Brewers in his final major league season in 2006.

Gonzalez played for current Cubs manager Lou Piniella in Tampa Bay and was on the mound when Sammy Sosa’s corked bat exploded in a game at Wrigley Field on June 3, 2003.

Willie Randolph remains manager of the New York Mets after a much-anticipated meeting with team ownership.

Randolph sat down Monday with owner Fred Wilpon and his son, Jeff, the club’s chief operating officer, as well as general manager Omar Minaya to discuss two things in particular: the team’s sluggish play, and Randolph’s comments last week about his portrayal on Mets broadcasts in which he raised the issue of race.

“Willie has my support. He has the support of our ownership,” Minaya said. “Willie’s job was never in danger going into this meeting.”

Bulls forward Joakim Noah was arrested and charged with misdemeanor drug and alcohol violations in Florida early Sunday morning.

Hornacek says he shares similarities with Paxson

Now 45, Hornacek -- who had a 14-year NBA playing career -- spent about five hours Friday trying to convince Bulls general manager John Paxson that he'd be the right man to coach his hometown team.

''I always felt I would coach someday,'' Hornacek said in a telephone interview after meeting with Paxson. ''I felt like my coaches looked at me as a coach on the floor, and I tried to take that responsibility. Before I got to the NBA, I probably never thought I'd coach in the league. Before then, I thought I'd probably end up coaching a college team.''

Hornacek, who said he thought his meeting with Paxson went well, believes he can strike the right balance between offense and defense, given the coaches he played for: Iowa State's Johnny Orr in college and Phoenix's Cotton Fitzsimmons and Utah's Jerry Sloan in the NBA.

''I've been blessed with having some great coaches,'' Hornacek said. ''With Cotton, we didn't have a lot of set plays. He was more about pushing the ball up the court and trusting you. He was very positive, very upbeat and just gave us great confidence. He would tell you taking an open 18-foot jumper early in the shot clock was just as good as a layup in the final seconds. Johnny Orr was a lot like that, too.''

Having played under Jerry Sloan for a number of years, I think we could do much worse than Hornacek as coach.

Danica Patrick goes for her first Indianapolis 500 victory

Danica Patrick is exhausted.

Life is a blur for the trailblazing driver more than a month after she made history as the first woman to win an IndyCar race.

You could see the fatigue in her eyes, but you couldn't hear it in her voice this week as she discussed her chances of winning the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday.

A perennial contender in the Indy 500, Patrick sounded confident and borderline brash as dozens of reporters and cameramen surrounded her at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Patrick has proved she can win, but whether she is capable of adding a signature victory -- the win that would put a stamp on her career and further validate her talent -- remains to be seen.

''There is no reason why I can't win this race at all,'' Patrick said.

Celtics win first road game to take 2-1 lead

The Boston Celtics insisted they weren’t worried about winning a road game, knowing their time would come in the playoffs. Perfect timing.

Kevin Garnett scored 22 points to lead Boston to a 94-80 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Saturday night and a 2-1 lead in the Eastern Conference finals.

“I think our guys just assumed we would eventually win on the road,” Celtics coach Doc Rivers said simply.

The NBA’s top-seeded team had lost its first six road games—tying a league record—and was 9-0 at home until losing to Detroit in the previous game.

“I think the loss rejuvenated us,” Celtics captain Paul Pierce said. “We really wanted to come out and get this one.”

The Pistons will host Game 4 on Monday night.

LSU eliminates Alabama from SEC Tournament

Blake Dean hit a grand slam in the eighth inning and drove in six runs to send streaking LSU into the Southeastern Conference tournament title game with a 12-8 comeback win over Alabama on Saturday.

Dean’s slam that easily cleared the right field fence off reliever Josh Copeland topped off a six-run inning for the Tigers (42-16-1). It also helped LSU match the school record 19-game winning streak set by the 1997 team.

Seeking their first tournament title since 2000, the Tigers will meet the Vanderbilt-Mississippi winner on Sunday. They have come from behind to win all three games at Regions Park.

“Another tremendous comeback by a great group of kids,” LSU coach Paul Mainieri said. “It sounds like a broken record.”

Dean, who had a two-run single and went 3-for-5, also hit the game-winning solo homer in the bottom of the 10th to beat South Carolina on Wednesday. He got ahead in the count 2-0.

“I was guessing he’d throw a fastball, and he threw it right down the middle,” Dean said. “Just like (Wednesday), it’s one of the greatest feelings I’ve ever had.”

The Crimson Tide (34-26) had scored six straight runs after falling behind, 3-0, and nearly rallied again. Josh Rutledge’s two-run single in the bottom of the eighth cut it to 10-8, but reliever Jared Bradford got two straight groundouts to keep the lead intact.

Edmonton Eskimos fullback Mike Maurer retires after 11 CFL seasons

Edmonton Eskimos fullback and special-teams player Mike Maurer is retiring after 10 CFL seasons.

He spent the past three years in Edmonton and was named the top Canadian in the Eskimos’ 2005 Grey Cup victory.

“I would like to thank the Eskimo organization and the fans for making my time in Edmonton the best part of my playing career,” Maurer said in a statement Tuesday.

Maurer was tied for the team lead with 20 special-teams tackles last season. He also caught two passes for 14 yards and one touchdown.

“Mike excelled at doing the tough jobs on field - special teams, blocking and long snapping,” said Edmonton head coach Danny Maciocia. “He should be very proud of everything he accomplished in the CFL and our entire organization wishes Mike and his family all the best in the future.”

Maurer, a 32-year-old Saskatoon native, also won a Grey Cup with the B.C. Lions in 2000. He broke into the league in 1998 with the Saskatchewan Roughriders and also played for the Ottawa Renegades.

Scott expects to return as Hornets coach

NBA coach of the year Byron Scott, who has the right to buy out the remainder of his contract and go to the highest bidder next season, showed little interest in leaving the Hornets on Wednesday.

“I expect to be here,” Scott said. “In my mind right now I hope to be here unless something crazy happens.”

The Hornets pay Scott about $3.5 million a year and the team’s majority owner, George Shinn, said he intends to make a fair extension offer that would make Scott one of the highest paid coaches in the league.

“Byron has done an outstanding job for us,” Shinn said. “I’m tired of flip-flopping and firing coaches. I want somebody to stay that I like. … I’m not going to be stupid. I’ll be as fair as I can to get him to stay with us.”

When Scott took over as coach following the 2003-04 season, he was the Hornets’ third coach in three seasons.

New feeling and bigger buzz at old Indy 500

Danica Patrick is a proven winner with a legitimate shot at taking the checkered flag, all the top teams and drivers are back for the 92nd running of the Indy 500 and optimism is high for what should, for the first time in 13 years, truly be “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.”

Much of the optimism comes from the long-awaited unification of the two American open-wheel series in February.

Pointing to the strong mix of experienced drivers and young talent at Indy, longtime team owner Roger Penske said he’s excited about the sport’s possibilities, now that everyone’s under the IRL IndyCar Series banner.

“You can feel and see the difference on pit road, with all the cars and people coming to watch practice and qualifying,” Penske said.

“I’ve been telling everybody the black cloud has lifted,” said Michael Andretti, a member of one of Indy’s signature families and co-owner of Andretti Green Racing. “It’s such a great feeling.”

Tiger Woods to skip Memorial following surgery

Tiger Woods decided Friday not to play in the Memorial as he recovers from knee surgery, meaning he likely will go to the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines without having played a tournament in two months.

Woods, who had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee April 15, was hopeful of playing before the U.S. Open. But his office notified the PGA Tour that he would not enter the Memorial, a tour official said.

This is the second time in three years that Woods has had a two-month layoff before a major championship. He missed nine weeks in 2006 while coping with the death of his father, returning to the U.S. Open at Winged Foot and missing the cut for the only time in a major.

“Tiger was looking forward to playing at the Memorial,” said Mark Steinberg, his agent at IMG. “But unfortunately, the timing of his recovery will not allow him to do so.”

Before making pick, Pax needs head coach

Normally I am on the opposite side of any Bulls article written by Jay Mariotti, a beat writer for the Chicago Sun-Times. This article, however, is different. It is nice read if you can get around his ever present contempt for ownership and management that is!

He is right about two things.

1. Get a good coach, sooner than later.

He makes some good points with the recent signings of head coaches by teams such as Charlotte, Dallas, New York, to mention a few. They signed their candidates within hrs of talking to them!

It is also important to have a coach, before the NBA draft. I think we need a coach that can discuss with John the type of game they want the Bulls to play next year, then make some draft night trades(should we go even younger) or have the coach there for second round pick!

A coach needs to be in place for the summer leagues that are to follow just days after the draft.

2. Draft Rose. Beasley is a talent. I admit that, but we have young talent in the front court already! Gooden is no stiff! Thomas and Noah are young and have potential to be very good players. Then there is Grey! A pleasant surprise in the sound round last summer!

Rose has the speed and game to make Bulls player better. Talented point guards do so much for their teams! New Orleans, Phoenix, and Utah can vouch for that. Rose is strong and gets the basket a lot! That is something this team has needed for a very long time. Good things happen when pt guards penetrate!

Franzen can practice

Johan Franzen is nearly back for the Detroit Red Wings.

He is expected to miss Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday night, but Detroit coach Mike Babcock says he will return at some point in the series.

Franzen skated with his teammates Thursday and was cleared to practice Friday.

The center known as “Mule” leads the NHL with 12 goals in the playoffs despite being scratched for the last five games of the second-round series against Dallas because of concussion-like symptoms.

Babcock says Franzen looks ready to play after watching him tip pucks in the net toward the end of Thursday’s workout, but doctors will decide when he will return.

Mayo dumps Duffy

O.J. Mayo has fired Bill Duffy and Associates and will select a new agent before leaving for the Orlando pre-draft camp next week, multiple sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Calvin Andrews, an agent for BDA, had been in Chicago trying frantically to hold onto his client. Since the agency was the center of an ESPN investigation into possible improprieties in the recruitment of the USC freshman star, a fierce tussle has played out behind the scenes for control of the 20-year-old prodigy’s future.

As first reported by Yahoo! Sports, Mayo’s mother, Alisha, and her son’s former Ohio high school coach and one-time legal guardian, Dwayne Barnes, wanted O.J. to fire BDA, sources said. The mother and coach are encouraging Mayo to hire New York-based agent Andy Miller, whose clients include Boston’s Kevin Garnett and Detroit’s Chauncey Billups.

NFL labor contract

NFL owners voted unanimously Tuesday to end their labor agreement with the players' union in 2011. The league and union, however, insisted the next three seasons won't be interrupted by a contract dispute and both sides are working toward a new deal.

"We have guaranteed three more years of NFL football," commissioner Roger Goodell said after the owners used the opt-out clause built into the agreement signed more than two years ago. "We are not in dire straits. We've never said that. But the agreement isn't working, and we're looking to get a more fair an equitable deal."

Celtics Beat Pistons in Game 1 of East Finals

Not even a week of rest could prepare the Detroit Pistons for the hottest home team in the NBA.

Kevin Garnett had 26 points and nine rebounds and Paul Pierce scored 22 points Tuesday night to give Boston an 88-79 victory over the Pistons in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals, the Celtics' 15th straight home win.

Despite having just one day off after an epic Game 7 that eliminated LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers from the conference semifinals, Boston scored the first eight points against a Detroit team that waited six days for the series to start.

"Rest is not an option,'' Garnett said. "So we don't even think about that.''

The Associated Press is reporting that Mike Piazza has decided to retire from baseball.

“After discussing my options with my wife, family and agent, I felt it is time to start a new chapter in my life,” he said in a statement released by his agent, Dan Lozano. “It has been an amazing journey.”

The 24-year-old lefty, who survived cancer to pitch the World Series clincher for the Boston Red Sox last fall, shut down Kansas City 7-0 Monday night for the first no-hitter in the majors this season.

Red Wings score three in the first to advance to Stanley Cup finals

DALLAS (AP) -- So much for the demise of the Detroit Red Wings. Not only are they headed back to the Stanley Cup finals, they're again looking like the club that dominated the regular season and most of the playoffs.

After consecutive losses hinted at vulnerability, the Red Wings bounced back strong in Game 6 of the Western Conference finals, getting first-period goals from Kris Draper, Pavel Datsyuk and Dallas Drake on their way to knocking out the Dallas Stars 4-1 on Monday night.

Sampson joins Skiles' staff with Bucks

MILWAUKEE -- Kelvin Sampson wants to restore his reputation and continue his career, and hopes he took a step in that direction by accepting a job as an assistant coach with the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday.

But Sampson will pass on the chance to explain his version of a messy divorce with Indiana University until after an NCAA hearing in mid-June.

"More will come out, and I'll be more than happy to talk after that," Sampson said.

Being an IU Basketball fan, I was dissapointed when Kelvin Sampson once again had to cheat in order to get ahead! One is for sure, he won't have to cheat with the NBA players. I might add, he knows the game of basketball as well.

Spurs outlast youthful Hornets, win Game 7 to advance to conference finals

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- As Manu Ginobili dribbled out the final few seconds of the second-round series clincher, Tony Parker walked over and gave him a congratulatory pat on the head.

There would be no exuberant celebration for the San Antonio Spurs when the final horn sounded, just a few hugs for a job well done. This playoff-savvy group was exhausted after a seven-game triumph over the younger, upstart New Orleans Hornets, but its title defense endures -- for now.

San Antonio is not ready to let the Hornets pass them! The Hornets gave them all they could handle, yet in the end, when the Spurs needed a score, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili were too much to handle!

Now its on to the West finals. Should be a good series between them and the Lakers.

Russia beats Canada in upset

Ilya Kovalchuk scored the game tying AND game winning goal today in a 5-4 win that gave Russia the gold for the first time in 16 years. The rocket of a goal came on the power play during a penalty on Rick Nash for delay of game just minutes into overtime.

Dany Heatley was named the MVP after tallying 20 points in the tournament.

Both goalies, Nabokov for Russia and Ward for Canada, made some great saves and let in some bad goals but in the end it was Nabokov who came out victorious for his team.

Is ESPN Classic About to Become ESPN3?

The word I just got from a source at ESPN is that ... ESPN has big plans for expanding ESPN Classic into potentially an ESPN3, with the English Premier League as one of the station's marquee draws. That whole scenario may wind up being wishful thinking but what is clear is the ESPN is interested in the EPL rights.

I am all for it! There is a lot of sports being played that is not played in the United States such as the above English Premier League! It is growing in popularity in the US!

What about Rugby? Austalian Rules Football? Arena Football? Euro Basketball? What if they try and get the rights to the NHL?

Big Brown wins Preakness. Triple Crown Next?

Not once but twice, jockey Kent Desormeaux sneaked a peek to see if anyone was gaining on Big Brown. "I looked between my legs, under my arms, and they were eight (lengths) behind me," Desormeaux said. "I stopped pushing. I said, `That's enough.'"

His big bay colt ran away with the Preakness on Saturday and now is pointed squarely down the path toward the Triple Crown.

The 3-year-old with the perfect record heads for the Belmont Stakes in three weeks as the fourth horse this decade to try for the triple, a sweep last accomplished by Affirmed in 1978. The last to try was Smarty Jones in 2004.

"Wow is all I can say," Steve Cauthen, who rode Affirmed, said by telephone from Kentucky. "He looks pretty special. It was like a cakewalk for him. The important thing to me is he keeps passing all the tests."

"It was a tough day, but I did it," Ochoa said. "I think that was what was important. It doesn't matter how you do it sometimes; you play really good, other players struggle, sometimes you just keep yourself in a good position. Today it was different; it was a different win, but I enjoyed it a lot."

After a brilliant 15 year career, LPGA celebrity Annika Sorenstam is hanging it up. The phenom took home the 72nd golf title of her career on Sunday and announced that she plans to retire at the end of the season.

2007 was a rough season for the Swedish athlete who remained winless due to injuries. This year the 37 year old golfer has won three tournaments. With her win on Sunday at the Michelob Ultra Open, Sorenstam has career earning of $22 million. Sorenstam was quoted saying:

"I have given it my all and it has been fun. I came back from an injury last year. I am healthy. I feel good. I have started strong this season and I will be leaving the game on my own terms.”

Charles Barkley Owes a $400,000 Gambling Debt

Former NBA Star Charles Barkley will be facing felony charges if he doesn’t pay a gambling debt worth $400,000 to a Las Vegas Strip casino.

“Do I have a gambling problem? Yeah, I do have a gambling problem,” Barkley said. “But I don’t consider it a problem because I can afford to gamble.”

Barkley has a gambling problem? I would have never noticed. Afterall, who doesn’t owe a casino hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Roger Federer has lost to Rafael Nadal 7-5, 6-7, 6-3 at the Hamburg Masters tennis tournament in Germany.

Nadal now holds a 9-1 record on clay against Federer, a fierce on-court rival, who has remained the top-ranked player on the ATP Tour for a record 225 straight weeks.

He couldn't see the lane. He couldn't see the pins. He couldn't see the people who had gathered behind him to see whether the blind man could accomplish something no one else at this alley ever had.

Only if he turned his head to the left could Davis see a thing. It has been this way for 11 years, the World War II veteran losing all his vision except for a tiny sliver of peripheral sight out of the corner of his right eye. His impairment is the result of a medical condition known as macular degeneration, in which the inner lining of the eye atrophies, in certain cases resulting in the loss of vision. For Davis, it is that tiny sliver of sight, not to mention a multicolored cane and 10 weeks of education for the vision-impaired, that allow him to live by himself. To take care of himself.

"If somebody comes up to me and says, 'Hello,' unless I recognize their voice, I have no idea who they are," Davis said. "In the bowling alley, looking straight down the wooden lane, I'm completely blind. Everything is just very, very hazy."

But on the evening of May 3, none of that mattered. After bowling a 160, a 150 and a 185 in his three previous games, Davis had rolled 11 consecutive strikes in his fourth and final game of the 2007-08 bowling season. All that stood between him and bowling perfection was one more strike.

Record-holder Ryan Giggs marked a lifetime's loyalty with the best present possible as he delivered another Premier League title to Manchester United as they beat Wigan 2-0.

United were in front but needing calming despite Cristiano Ronaldo's first-half penalty when Giggs kept his nerve to coolly slot home Wayne Rooney's through ball.

A quarter of an hour earlier, Giggs' had been introduced for his 758th United appearance, equalling a milestone left by Sir Bobby Charlton that will surely be eclipsed in Moscow on May 21.

Olympic Dream Stays Alive, on Synthetic Legs

When an international court ruled Friday that a double-amputee sprinter from South Africa was eligible to compete in this summer’s Olympic Games in Beijing, the stage was set for disabled athletes to meet their own trailblazer.

The watershed ruling made the runner, Oscar Pistorius, the first amputee to successfully challenge the notion that his carbon-fiber prosthetics gave him an unfair advantage and assured his right to race against able-bodied athletes in the Olympics, should he qualify. Previously barred from competing in such races by track and field’s world governing body, Pistorius will continue to stoke the debate over the competitive issues created by evolving technology in sports.

The ruling’s direct impact on disabled athletes could be limited, in part because Pistorius, 21, still must post a time fast enough to qualify for the Games. Yet his victory Friday in the Court of Arbitration for Sport sent a message that could long resonate among Paralympians.

Two things, first this has the makings of a feel good story! A person that had both legs taken off still has the desire and devotion to qualify for the Olympics! He is an inspiration to anyone that is considers themselves down and out.

Second the cynics side of things. His carbon-fiber prosthetics gave him an unfair advantage. They are stat of the art, and some say this gives him a definate advantage over the average athlete.

NFL owners could opt out of CBA with union as early as Tuesday

NFL owners might opt out of the existing labor agreement as soon as Tuesday when they hold their next meetings in Atlanta, according to league sources.

One management source called it a "high likelihood" that the owners will exercise their option to terminate the agreement, which will trigger a number of alternatives, including a potential work stoppage by 2011. Another source said "be prepared" for the action, although it was "not a 100 percent proposition yet."

An NFL Players Association source said, "We expect it to happen."

This won't affect the next two season, but it will be interesting to see what happens after that.

Where do you stands on Kesslers claim that your own team were the one's who made sure there was no fight?

Kessler and his team are a joke. They ran away like a scared mouse. I had agreed to fight Abraham and when they knew I was in final negotiations, they came running back.

Did you lose respect for Kessler because of this whole situation?

I am not sure it was all Kessler that had the problem. I hear his promoter is a bad person. If he wants to fight me, I will be around after I beat up Abraham again.

Do you still have the burning desire to fight Jermain Taylor?

Of course. That will be a fun fight for me. Ever since he stole the belt from Bernard Hopkins I have wanted to show him how to fight like a real man. If he wants to get beat up at Super Middleweight, I will take the job.
